AKEL MEP G.Georgiou proposal for an extra €182 million to combat climate

AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou press release, 29 July 2022

The destruction of the environment due to the abuse of natural resources and the reckless actions of multinationals is enormous. At the same time, energy poverty afflicts 1 in 4 citizens of the EU.  For the Group of the European United Left it is clear that new policies for economic and social development are needed, policies that should aim at promoting sustainable development for the benefit of the peoples and to put an end to the exploitation of the environment seeking to serve private interests. Green capitalism, which is destroying economically the peoples and rewarding the main polluters with heaps of money as “green monopolies”, cannot continue.

Within this framework, AKEL MEP G. Georgiou, as shadow Rapporteur for the Community budget for 2023, together with the shadow rapporteur of the Green Group in the European Parliament, has tabled a proposal for an increase in the budget to be allocated for climate and energy under ‘Horizon Europe’.

More specifically, MEP’s C. Georgiou and R. Andresen, submitted an amendment, calling for an increase of the budget by 182 million to be used to fight climate change and achieve zero emissions, for sustainable development and real environmental protection.

The proposal was approved by a majority of MEP’s in the European Parliament’s Energy, Industry and Research Committee. Speaking before the Energy Committee of the European Parliament, Giorgos Georgiou stressed that the most important thing is that there is finally the political will on the part of the ruling forces to promote a comprehensive strategy for the development of renewable energy sources in all sectors. Substantial public investments should be made to promote the necessary infrastructures and to provide support to small producers. A greater penetration of renewable energy sources in our energy system will ensure a reduction in emissions and, at the same time, cheap energy for citizens.
