AKEL meeting with the Workers’ Party of Belgium

AKEL-PTB/PVDA express concerns for the future of the peoples of Europe

4 April 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, who is in Brussels to participate in the “Europe for the Peoples” Forum, held a meeting today with a delegation of the Workers’ Party of Belgium PTB/PVDA.

The concerns of the two Parties about the growing difficulties working people and a significant section of Europe’s citizens are facing due to the ongoing price hikes/expensiveness and growing inequalities resulting from the neoliberal policies being imposed by the ruling elites in the EU were discussed during the meeting.

The meeting also discussed the rise of the far-right in Europe. The far-right is weaponsing the growing socio-economic problems faced by large masses across the EU, as well as also cultivating illusions among European societies with its populism regarding the role of the far right to address the problems. The ultra-right is using the fear of the immigration issue and at the same time is being normalised by the forces of the Right which either tolerate, collaborate or are in a coalition government with it.

The two party delegations agreed to continue their close cooperation both in the European Parliament and in other international and regional fora.

The delegation of AKEL included the Head of the Party’s International Relations and European Policy, Vera Polycarpou. On behalf of the Workers’ Party of Belgium, the meeting was attended by the Vice President of PTB/PVDA David Pestieau and MEP Marc Botenga.
