AKEL Limassol denounces the Limassol Municipality’s decision for the construction of a Monument to honour Grivas

Statement of AKEL Limassol District Organization, 14th October 2017

The AKEL Limassol District Committee denounces in the strongest possible terms the decision taken by the Municipality of Limassol for the construction of a monument to honour Grivas on the site of his grave.

The decision taken by the majority of the Limassol Municipal City Council with the votes of DISY, Solidarity, ELAM and the Citizens’ Alliance, as well as the abstention of the city’s Mayor, represents a huge provocation for the Democratic people of Limassol.

Everyone knows, and if they didnt know it they ought to learn, that Limassol was a city of Resistance and Democracy. It has heroes who sacrificed their lives fighting against the criminal activities of EOKA B and Grivas. Limassol, was the city where the constitutional order and the legitimate government of Archbishop Makarios III was defended from the illegal actions of the Greek Junta and EOKA B, which had Grivas, the destroyer of Cyprus, as its leader.

43 years afterwards, the Cypriot people are still suffering from the consequences of the twin crime of the coup d’état and brutal Turkish invasion. The Democratic People of Limassol do not tolerate the awarding of honors to the well-known “X” organization member and common criminal of Cyprus. Those who took or aided this decision should be ashamed of themselves.

Grivas with his criminal activity is a common traitor in the minds of the people. The flag of Turkey on the occupied Pentadactylos mountain range reminds us every day of his life and times!

We call all progressive and democratic citizens of Limassol to join the protest meeting being organized on Monday 16th October 2017 at 6.00 pm at the Governor’s Square.
