AKEL GS on the informal 5+1 meeting on Cyprus: “We should proceed to a serious reflection”

AKEL is formulating a proposal which it will submit to the President of the Republic on how the situation as it is evolving should be handled after the result of the informal 5 + 1 conference in Geneva, the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou stated.

Although he said that he considers the fact that the procedure has been kept alive as significant, A.Kyprianou did not hide his disappointment and stressed that returning to Cyprus, everyone must proceed to a serious reflection.

The General Secretary of AKEL said that coming to Geneva expectations were low due to Turkey’s unacceptable demands for a two-state solution or confederation or recognition of sovereign equality.

“I would like to welcome the position of the Secretary General of the United Nations, who has made it clear in several cases that the terms of his mandate from the UN Security Council do not permit him to discuss anything other than the solution of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. “This clear stance of the UN Secretary General is a response to all those who, either in public or behind closed doors, have enabled the acceptance of Turkey’s unacceptable demands to be floated around,” he said.

According to the General Secretary of AKEL, it is important that the procedure is kept alive, but he said that we are disappointed because the Cyprus problem hasn’t been brought closer to the solution, the occupation is still continuing, the difficulties and dangers still exist and the possibility of Turkey proceeding to new fait accompli is hanging over our heads.

“In our opinion, on returning to Cyprus, both the President of the Republic and the political parties must proceed to a very serious reflection about how, first and foremost, a new attempt to impose new fait accompli is to be addressed, either in the Exclusive Economic Zone, or in Varosha. At the same time, we need to think about what needs to be done to pave the way for a solution based on the agreed framework,” he said.

According to the General Secretary of AKEL, the convening of a second informal conference alone is not going to resolve any issue “and I think it serves no purpose to go after a few months to an informal conference where a scenario similar to the one we experienced over the past few days in Geneva is repeated”.

“We as AKEL will reflect in a very serious manner about developments as they have evolved and we shall form an opinion, elaborate a proposal which we will submit to the President of the Republic on how he should handle the situation as it is developing,” he noted.
