AKEL calls on the government to proceed with the taxation of energy companies’ exorbitant profits

6 February 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The government ruling forces must feel the consequences of the new increases coming in the price of electricity. If green taxes but also new increases in the price of electricity are now added to the already high cost of living, increased interest rates and rents, the vast majority of households and small and medium-sized enterprises will literally be driven into financial suffocation. The responsibilities of the previous government, whose scandalous energy policies drove the country in energy insecurity and ended with society paying hundreds of millions of euros in fines for pollutants, are incalculable.

The Christodoulides government must provide an answer as to how it will confront the situation and what it plans to do about the electricity price increases, especially as the electricity subsidy expires at the end of the month.

AKEL calls for compensatory measures to be taken for consumers, starting with the continuation of the electricity subsidy measure. Furthermore, AKEL calls on the government to proceed with the taxation of energy companies’ exorbitant profits so as to finance measures to support society. This was the pledge made by Mr. Christodoulides during the election campaign.
