AKEL backs leader’s joint request towards UN for the continuation of the Conference on Cyprus on a political level

AKEL welcomes the strong determination expressed by the leaders of both communities to continue the negotiation on the outstanding issues of the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem. AKEL backs their joint request towards the UN for the continuation of the Conference on Cyprus, on a political level, in the beginning of March.

The aim of the upcoming meetings must primarily be to arrive within range of an agreement on targeted core outstanding issues. In doing so the chances of success at the Conference will increase. The permanent members of the United Nations Security Council must also be present in the final phase of the Conference, given that the approval of a strong resolution that will adopt the solution, guarantee its implementation and establish an international police force with a specific mandate on the issue of security is imperative.

AKEL considers the convening of the National Council necessary as soon as possible so that the body is briefed on the results of the Mont Peleran conference at a technocratic level, but also for an exchange of views on the next steps during this crucial phase of the Cyprus problem.
