AKEL on Turkish Cypriot newspaper report on 4:1 population ratio

Regarding the press report of the Turkish Cypriot newspaper “Afrika” in relation to the four freedoms for the Turkish citizens, we refer to the Downer document “Convergences 2008-2012”, which has been made public. The document in question states that the flow of Turkish citizens in Cyprus can only be done in line with a 4: 1 ratio with Greek citizens.
It is precisely from this very convergence that Turkey is trying to escape and rid itself from, while our side invokes it as a protective shield.
The convergence of the ratio of four Greeks to one Turk doesn’t just concern the acquisition of nationality, but also the flow and more specifically the stay of Turkish citizens in Cyprus, even after a possible accession of Turkey to the EU.
