The two leaders must focus on the targeted discussion of important outstanding issues of the internal aspect of the Cyprus problem

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 7th February 2017, Nicosia

geneva cpr cyprusConsidering the situation surrounding the Cyprus problem, and given the difficulties that exist, AKEL stresses the need for the leaders of both communities to focus on the targeted discussion of important outstanding issues of the internal aspects of the problem.

If it is possible to achieve convergences and for progress to be recorded on these issues, this development will be helpful in the discussion of the international aspect of the problem, namely security and guarantees.

If the key issues are not discussed and left at the end, it won’t be possible to overcome the blockage which the negotiation procedure has entered into, resulting in this procedure breaking down or, at best, to be barely kept alive.
