Workers fierce resistance and the balance of forces forced DISY to suspend its machinations to criminalize strikes

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 13th April 2016, Nicosia

apergiaAKEL expresses its satisfaction as the balance of forces in the House of Representatives and the powerful and universal resistance of working people’s organizations eventually forced the leadership of the governing DISY party to suspend for the time being the authoritarian and unilateral machinations to impose the criminalization of the right to strike. We have no illusions whatsoever as to whether the DISY leadership and the Anastasiades Government will terminate its frenzy of aggression against the rights and demands of working people.

However events themselves have demonstrated that the social and labour struggles waged and the decisive resistance to the anti-worker machinations of the government and ruling forces can make the difference; they offer protection, but also bring about the defeat of government policies, which have led to wages in the private sector falling continuously over the last three years, the middle class having been wiped out and Cypriot society transformed into the most unequal Europe, after the Baltic States.
