DISY government and big business are organising the undermining of a single-insurance NHS
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
Organised patients, all the trade unions of our country, movements and organisations that worked for the National Health Scheme (NHS), two former Ministers of Health, almost the whole of society is opposed to the appointment of Petros Agathangelou to the Board of the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO). One member of the Board has already resigned and reports state that the President of the HIO intends to resign in protest against the government’s decision. What more does it take for the government ruling forces to realise that they have to revoke their decision?
The issue is not personal, it is purely political and concerns the ruling party’s hidden agenda for the NHS. Society has understood what is happening. The DISY government and big business interests are organising the gnawing and undermining of a single-insurance NHS. Using the same formula that they used to engineer the closure of the Cyprus Co-operative Bank, they now want to change the social character of the NHS.
The message from society is one and it is very clear and loud: The government must revoke here and now the appointment of Petros Agathangelou to the HIO.
