Victory against privatization bill doesn’t make us complacent

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 13th April 2016, Nicosia

AHK econAccording to public statements made by political forces, the draft Bill – jointly submitted by AKEL, Social democratic EDEK, Citizen’s Alliance and the Ecologists – to postpone the enforcement of the government’s Bill for the privatization of the Semi-governmental Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) and Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) is expected to be approved tomorrow by a big majority of the House of Representatives.

For us, this development represents a victory of society and working people against the Memorandum neoliberal dead-end path which the leadership of the DISY party and the Anastasiades Government has been promoting the last three years. Furthermore, the joint draft bill will put an end to the state of uncertainty which has existed in recent years and which is undermining the future and perspective of these semi-governmental organizations, paving the way for their further modernization and enhancement of their competitiveness.

Of course, avoiding the implementation of one of the most onerous provisions of the Memorandum does not make us complacent. So long as it remains in power, the DISY party will be looking for ways to deliver public wealth and assets to their private capital friends.
