With the occupation and partition deepening every day, the only way out today is through the resumption of talks on a correct basis
Statement by Christos Christofides, AKEL Nicosia – Kyrenia District Secretary and a member of the Political Bureau of AKEL
AKEL on UN Secretary General’ envoy on Cyprus Mrs. Lute’s contacts
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 3 February 2019, Nicosia
The contacts of the UN Secretary General’s envoy on Cyprus Mrs. Lute began today with the aim of formulating the terms of reference and resuming the negotiations. Not everything depends on our side, but at this crucial turning point for our country’s future, it is of utmost importance that we do everything that needs to be done aiming at the resumption of the negotiations or if this is not achieved due to Turkey’s negative attitude this should be clear to the whole of the international community.
Mr. Anastasiades in the effort to formulate the terms of reference must be convincing and very clear:
– To defend and safeguard the agreed framework for a federal solution to the Cyprus problem. Any deviation from the agreed framework would mean a two states solution (even through confederation) and partition, that is to say the fulfillment of Turkey’s long-standing strategic goal to the detriment of the Cypriot people.
– To safeguard the Convergences that have been achieved to date and the Guterres framework, which Mr. Anastasiades himself said that it would be “insane” if he did not make use of. We recall that the Guterres framework, inter alia, abolishes the Guarantees and provides for the withdrawal of occupation troops.
At a critical juncture for our homeland and people, with the occupation and partition deepening every day, the only way out today is through the resumption of the talks on a correct basis.
