AKEL on Deputy Chairman of “Citizens Alliance” revelations on the President’s handling of the Cyprus problem

Reply by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 31 October 2018, Nicosia

Today, the Deputy Chairman of the “Citizens’ Alliance” Panagiotis Savvides tried to refute what he said yesterday that the President of the Republic between the First and Second Round of the Presidential Elections told his “Citizens’ Alliance” that he is negotiating something different from what all the previous Presidents of the Republic of Cyprus were negotiating. That is to say, he is negotiating a solution with elements of confederation and two states.

The attempt by Mr. Savvides and “Citizens’ Alliance” to provide cover for the President, indeed when the Presidential himself did not react at all to the statement he made yesterday, is compassionate. What Mr. Savvides said yesterday is recorded and everyone can hear and read precisely what he said. The “Citizens’ Alliance” party doesn’t need to make an effort to provide cover for the President of the Republic, given that politicians, journalists, foreign leaders, Ambassadors and the Government Spokesman himself say are what Mr. Savvides said yesterday about the President. For that reason, the “Citizens’ Alliance and Mr. Savvides will remain exposed.
