President Anastasiades didn’t tell the truth about the American helicopter base

Statement by AKEL-Left-New Forces Parliamentary Representative Y.Loucaides

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 30 October 2018, Nicosia

The Foreign Minister informed the House of Representative’s Foreign Affairs Committee today that the government was from the very beginning informed of the presence of a US helicopter base within the British bases. As a matter of fact, President Anastasiades and his staff/team have once again not told us the truth when these specific press reports came out.

We are certain that as with the other questions we put concerning the American’s continuing military presence in the English bases the President and his staff haven’t told us the truth once again. We expect the government not only to tell the truth, but also to assert the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.

The British, according to international law, cannot decide by themselves to host other countries’ equipment, military presence and search vessels on the territory of the British bases, which are evidently not used for peaceful purposes, but are turning our country into an aggressive launching pad.
