What AKEL has to say on the Cyprus problem it does so publicly in bold and clear terms

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 13th September 2017, Nicosia

For AKEL, the management of the Cyprus problem is a collective matter and not the personal affair of its leader. The leadership of DIKO, perhaps judging others by its own standards, doesn’t seem to be unable to understand this.

AKEL provided support to the negotiating procedure even despite its disagreements with the President’s policies and handlings. It doesn’t however co-formulate policy on the Cyprus problem. This is the responsibility of the President of the Republic. What AKEL has to say on the Cyprus states it does so publicly in bold and clear terms without hiding.

Therefore instead of the leadership of DIKO playing hide and seek with regards its positions on the Cyprus problem, it should state in public that it continues to support the agreed basis of the solution as expressed in the unanimous communiqué of the National Council session in 2009.

Will the DIKO leadership explain to us, along with all those circles and forces who back the candidacy of N. Papadopoulos, how will they provoke political cost to Turkey when the new strategy they are advertising leads to the international isolation of Cyprus?

The management of the Cyprus problem, especially at the critical moment it is going through today, needs a responsible and serious policies.
