AKEL on the Archdiocese’s announcement on creating schools

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11th September 2017, Nicosia AKEL

According to various sources, public kindergartens, but also children’s clubs, are coming under the control of the Archdiocese. Under the weight of the financial problems children’s clubs are facing as a result of the government’s cuts in funds and the state’s reduced ability to provide support to this very important social activity, they are handing the management of these clubs over to the Archdiocese, which in turn is seeking to put them under its control.

On both this and the other matter the government and ruling forces are deliberately avoiding the issue. People know very well that that they are unswerving advocates of privatization. It appears that in doing so they are extending the policies of privatization to Education. Moreover, however, people are also wondering: Don’t they care about safeguarding the legislation and secular nature of the education provided as the Archdiocese is declaring that it will set up schools and upgrade its intervention in education in various ways? This is an issue about which they must provide answers to instead of keeping silent.
