We demand the immediate release of Andreas Soutzis
Joint statement by AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou-Niyazi Kızılyürek
8 September 2022
A joint statement on the detention of Andreas Soutzi by the occupation regime was issued by AKEL MEP’s Giorgos Georgiou and N.Kizilyurek.
“It is with regret that we have been informed of the renewal of the detention of Andreas Soutzi by the occupation regime. Such actions are unfounded and destroy the climate between the two communities at a time when maximum cooperation should be sought between them.
Andreas Soutzis is a well-known activist for the reunification of Cyprus and our people. He has very friendly relations with a large number of Turkish Cypriots and frequently visits the occupied territories. This is the reason why his activities have been targeted by nationalists from both communities.
However, his imprisonment on charges of possessing a radio, photographic material from a military area on suspicion of espionage is unprecedented. It is important to note the support he is receiving from Turkish Cypriot compatriots who yesterday stood outside the court at the renewal of his detention and expressed their support.
As MEP’s we express our solidarity with Andreas Soutzis and demand his immediate release. At the same time we declare that we will raise the issue at every opportunity in the EU institutions until his release is achieved.”
