Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 15th April 2016, Nicosia

semigovernmental econThe overwhelming majority of the House of Representatives yesterday put an end to the attempt by the leadership of DISY party and the Anastasiades government to loot the Semi-governmental organizations of CYTA (Cyprus Telecommunications Authority) and EAC (Cyprus Electricity Authority). This positive development crushes the neoliberal “there is no other alternative” theory and reaffirms that society and working people – through their struggles – can make the difference and change things.

We expect that the President of the Republic will respect the democratic verdict of the House of Representatives, the legitimacy of which has never been questioned. In doing so, Mr. Anastasiades will also show respect towards the pledge he made in writing during the presidential election campaign, ending the chaos of pledges and broken pledges on this serious issue.

It is the government’s obligation to focus on the need to further modernize these organizations so that they can continue their significant contribution to society, as well as to ensure the constant improvement in their efficiency and competitiveness. Anything else, that would prolong the state of uncertainty for these crucially important organizations, would represent a deliberate attempt to undermine them.
