Ukraine ceasefire Agreement
Statement by Costas Christodoulides, Head of the International Relations and European Affairs Department of the C.C. of AKEL
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 13th February 2015, Nicosia
AKEL considers the ceasefire agreement reached yesterday in Minsk regarding the crisis in Ukraine as very important. If implemented the agreement will be a good basis to avoid the worst, offering greater prospects for peace.
Both the ceasefire, as well as more rights for the citizens in the eastern region of the country and other very significant elements that the agreement appears to specify, must be implemented in practice.
The need for the imperialist circles to abandon their expansionism in the region and to support the Agreement’s implementation is of enormous importance. Furthermore, we note the serious reservations expressed within the European Union by countries that fully align their policy to that of NATO and the US, such as Britain but also the President of the European Council, who seem to insist on continuing the sanctions policy against Russia, regardless of the consequences.
We urge the Government of the Republic of Cyprus to actively support the peace efforts despite whatever plans by the pro-transatlantic circles both within and outside the EU. This is what the principled positions and the goal of peace demand.
AKEL expresses its solidarity with the Communist Party of Ukraine, which is being prosecuted by the Porosenko government, which using every means is continuing to seek its prohibition and banning, since the Party’s positions and struggle in favour of peace do not appear to be in line with the government’s objectives.
