Turkey’s warnings and interventions unacceptable

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 30th April 2015, Nicosia

Akinci 2AKEL considers the interventions of Turkey’s political leadership unacceptable and condemnable, which without any inhibitions whatsoever has warned the new Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci that it is Ankara who is in charge of affairs and decides in occupied Cyprus and on the handling of the Cyprus problem.

Turkey’s political leadership has revealed and exposed itself internationally with its behaviour; a behaviour, which is moving in the opposite direction to its public rhetoric and assurances that Ankara makes before its international interlocutors as to its readiness to contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem.

Ankara’s extreme reaction towards a Turkish Cypriot leader who declares that he is ready for a solution objectively perpetuates the reflection about Turkey’s intentions and with regards the prospect of the procedure for the resumption of negotiations. This development however must not under any circumstances lead to hasty and absolute assessments being made and chiefly it must not divert us from our goals and the need to make appropriate use of the window of opportunity that is opening for a solution of the Cyprus problem.
