Cyprus-Greece-Egypt summit a positive development

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th April 2015, Nicosia

trimeris int The tripartite summit meeting between the Republic of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt is a continuation of the meeting held in Cairo and undoubtedly is a positive development for the turbulent region of the Eastern Mediterranean in general and Cyprus in particular.

In expectation of an official briefing so that AKEL can state its position in a comprehensive manner, we stress that any actions which enhance regional cooperation, security and stability in our region is always welcome.

The agenda itself shows that the tripartite summit fits precisely into this context. Issues concerning, inter alia, economic relations, energy cooperation, the Cyprus and Palestinian problem, migration in the light of the severe humanitarian crisis and the consequences of the criminal activity of the “Islamic state” organization will be discussed.

AKEL stresses in particular the fact that the effort to enhance cooperation in our turbulent region is not based on logics of exclusion and will not be directed against any state in the region, including of course Turkey.

The revived hope for the solution of the Cyprus problem, with Mr. Akinci assuming the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community and a possible solution to the problem, will certainly facilitate the participation of the neighboring country in this cooperation.
