Turkey’s role on the Ukrainian issue is upgraded and being applauded by the EU and NATO members
AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou: The EU is falling into the suffocating embrace of the US

The energy shortage, the increase in the price of products due to the undermining of the food chain, the reduction in the economic activity of numerous services and, in addition, the fall in the flow of tourists will all have immediate consequences on the European peoples, AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou underlined in his statements to “Haravgi” newspaper.
The AKEL MEP added that as a result of the sanctions that have been imposed these will also have severe consequences for the economy of Cyprus, given that in recent years Cyprus has developed economic relations with Russia and Ukraine. This cost, he noted, will be added to the increase in fuel prices for which the government is also responsible. G. Georgiou stressed that the government should have asserted, just as other EU member states have done, exemptions from the scope of the sanctions imposed, while at the same time demanding compensatory measures too.
Right now, the AKEL MEP pointed out, Europe is sending out the impression of being under the control of the US, given that the decision for the imposition of sanctions were in effect taken across the Atlantic and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was announcing them as a resonator, without the leaders of European countries having safeguarded the interests of their peoples, especially those of small member states. With regard to the decisions to put an end to Europe’s dependence on Russian natural gas, G. Georgiou said that it was a hollow argument, given that it is impossible to implement it in line with the timeframes that have been set.
As regards the role of Turkey and the EU’s stand towards it, the AKEL MEP stressed that the Europeans are implementing numerous double standards policies. With its role on the Ukraine issue, Turkey is being upgraded and applauded by the EU and NATO members, while Ankara is deflecting any pressure it was under for its illegal activities in the Eastern Mediterranean and is also putting in a serious bid to get a positive agenda for any demands it has for its EU accession course. At the same time, its aggressive behaviour for 48 years in Cyprus, its violation of international law, but also its position for a two state solution in Cyprus is being ignored, concluded G. Georgiou.
