Stefanos Stefanou: Change with a progressive content is an urgent need for Cypriot society

Sunday 3 April 2022, “Haravgi” newspaper

The need for change is a conviction held by the overwhelming majority of Cypriot society. The country cannot withstand another five year term of DISY party in government with Averof Neophytou or Nikos Christodoulides at the helm. It cannot withstand because it will be a five-year period during which – if either one or the other were to be elected, as continuators of the destructive work of the Anastasiades-DISY government – will put the final nail in the coffin on the Cyprus problem forever, inequalities will deepen even more, the belt of austerity will be tightened even more for the many with the implementation of anti-social policies and corruption in the country will reach new unprecedented heights. It will be a five-year period in which the majority of society will suffer even more insecurity in the economic, social and employment fields and the country will continue to be shamed internationally as a laundry for dirty money and a haven for fraudsters.

The change that the country needs, therefore, cannot be a mere change in the face and name of the President, but a substantive change, with a progressive content. This change is an absolute necessity for Cyprus and Cypriot society, in order to put an end to the downward slide and open up a new perspective for our country and our people.

Precisely because AKEL understands this need, it is making constant and intense efforts so as to pave the way for as many people as possible to work for this change, a political and social majority current in society that will be a carrier of what is new and progressive, what the country needs today more than ever before. To keep the prospect of a solution to the Cyprus problem alive, to launch policies for the benefit of society, policies for growth, for young people, for the support of those in need, for Cyprus to experience other, better days.
