Trump’s warmongering statements reveal the US imperialist objectives

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 12 April 2018, Nicosia

Donald Trump’s provocative and warmongering statements made yesterday aren’t verbal foolish words of some colourful character. They express the cynicism of American imperialism, also revealing the real causes of the endless bloodshed and illustrating the threat of a new escalation.

The war being waged isn’t about democracy in Syria, nor about the civilians killed by unconfirmed chemical attacks. The US don’t such sensitivities. The war is being waged to impose the imperialist restructuring plans in the Middle East and for the control of the energy sources and pipelines, including the destabilization and division of Syria within this framework.

The interests of the Cypriot people demands that there must be no involvement whatsoever of Cyprus in the imminent attack to be carried out against Syria about which the United States, Britain and their allies have issued threats. Nor, of course, must Cyprus get involved more generally in the war in the neighbouring country. The use of the British bases in Cyprus or the granting of any facilities by the Republic of Cyprus for the waging of military raids is a danger for our people. At the same time it also constitutes an indirect involvement in a war against the neighbouring people of Syria.

AKEL calls on the Cypriot people to be on alert so that a universal message should be conveyed in every direction that Cyprus must not be transformed, neither into a NATO launching pad base, nor into an “outpost of the West” as the Anastasiades government has proclaimed it for some years now. Cyprus must be a bridge of peace for the peoples of our region and our people must stand in solidarity with Syria and its people.
