Cyprus must not get involved in the US and NATO war plans

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11 April 2018, Nicosia

The threats issued by the US and its allies for waging a military attack in Syria, together with the intense activity of the US Navy in the Eastern Mediterranean, represent a new and dangerous action in the drama Syria is going through. At the same time, developments over the last 24 hours are creating the danger of lighting the fuse for a generalized armed clash in the region from which the peoples of our neighborhood will be the only losers.

The pretext being used by the US – once again – is unconfirmed and unproven reports regarding the use of chemical weapons in Eastern Guta. Of course, humanity also recalls the “information” propagated by the US and NATO about the weapons of mass destruction which Saddam Hussein supposedly had at his disposable; “information which was used as an excuse to carry out the attack back then in Iraq.

The truth is that the long-suffering people of Syria, for seven years, is paying with its blood, the operation conducted by the Western powers aiming at the overthrow of the country’s government and the promotion of their geopolitical plans within the context of the ongoing energy competition in the region. To fulfill these goals, they didn’t hesitate to initially arm and fund extremist terrorist organizations, including the murderous “Islamic State” organization that was fighting against the lawful government of Syria.

AKEL believes that any involvement of Cyprus in the American-NATO plans against Syria does not make our country a “factor of stability”, nor does it “upgrade Cyprus’ geopolitical role”. On the contrary, it involves Cyprus in war plans against a neighboring people and against the territorial integrity of a sovereign state, while at the same time creating serious dangers for the country itself and our people.

The use of the British bases or any other facilities on the island for military raids makes Cyprus a launching pad of the attack and as a consequence renders Cyprus part of the war against Syria and its people. The government bears the critical responsibility to spell out that our country is not part of this war and these plans.

Solidarity with the Syrian people, the demand for an immediate ceasefire of the hostilities and for peace, the termination of the foreign interventions in Syria, the respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and the rejection of the plans for the division of Syria, is the only political response to our neighboring country’s drama.
