For the time being Cyprus has avoided the worst. We should not celebrate but reflect on our next steps

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19th March 2016, Nicosia

cc AKEL ezekiaThe President of the governing DISY party and the Government Spokesman assessed the results of the European Council to serve pre-election expediencies. Only this can explain the celebratory tone and idealistic references that supposedly Turkey came up against the Cyprus problem for the first time or that we have supposedly been successful because of the government’s successes in the economy. What evidently happened is that we came under intense pressure to accept the opening of chapters without Turkey previously fulfilling its obligations towards Cyprus. If the fact that, for the time being, we have avoided the worst is open to celebrations and not for a reflection on our next steps, let this be judged by citizens themselves.
