The vindication of the Palestinian people’s struggle will be the vindication of every progressive and democratic person

29 November 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, at the head of a Party delegation, visited the Embassy of Palestine today on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

In his statements, St. Stefanou said that “we are here, first of all, to denounce Israel’s criminal policy against the Palestinian people”. “A criminal policy,” he noted, “that did not start now, but many decades ago. Now we are at a climax with Israel’s criminal and exterminating policy being pursued against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. An all-out attack that is under way and has so far claimed the lives of more than 14,000 civilians, mostly women and children. A raid whose results border on ethnic cleansing and genocide,” S.Stefanou continued.

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL stressed that “in the face of this situation, no democratic, progressive person can remain apathetic”. “We need,” he said, “the international community to stand up and resolutely confront this criminal policy. It needs to visibly and persistently demand the implementation of the Resolutions of the UN and agreements for the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

“AKEL has always stood on the side of the Palestinian people’s struggle, just as it stands by the struggle of all the peoples struggling for their rights, fighting for the strengthening of international law, peace and cooperation,” noted S.Stefanou. He said that “the implementation of the agreements and resolutions on Palestine will bring peace and cooperation and this is what the international community must demand”.

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL also

pointed out that “the Cypriot people are victims of Turkey’s invasion, occupation and colonisation and can understand from their own bitter experience what is happening in the Gaza Strip and elsewhere as a result of the criminal policy being implemented by Israel”.

“We need to stand in solidarity”, Stefanos Stefanou underlined, “and we shall continue to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people’s struggle until the final vindication. The vindication of the Palestinian struggle will be the vindication of every progressive and democratic human being”.

Finally, addressing the Ambassador of Palestine, the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL expressed AKEL’s condolences to all the families of the victims and reiterated the Party’s solidarity and support.

The AKEL delegation included, among others, Haris Karamanos Central Organisational Secretary and Neoklis Sylikiotis, both members of the Political Bureau of the Party, and Vera Polycarpou, Head of International Relations and European Policy of the C.C. of AKEL.
