The procedure decided by the two leaders must take a concrete form and be agreed in a precise manner, in advance

Statement of the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou on the Cyprus problem

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th December 2016, Nicosia

cyprus NATO cprThe reference in the conclusions of the Council Summit of the European Union on the Cyprus problem represents a positive development. The Council reiterates its support towards the procedure for the reunification of Cyprus, stressing that Cyprus is and will remain a member of the EU after the solution and declares its readiness to participate in the Geneva conference. In this way, the European Union enhances the international character of the conference, while in effect it stands in favour of the continuity of the Republic of Cyprus.

AKEL considers it useful to reiterate once again that the procedure that was decided by the two leaders must take a concrete form and be agreed in a precise manner, in advance, so that procedural obstacles will not surface with substantial ramifications in Geneva. To that end, the proper preparation by all parties is imperative, while the full coordination between Cyprus and Greece is also of upmost importance.

It must be ensured that the Republic of Cyprus will not be de-recognized at any stage of the procedure, fully recognizing the fact that this must be done in a way that will not lead to a procedural deadlock. Besides the European Union, which is already declaring that it will be present, the presence of the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council is imperative in Geneva, given that the endorsement of a resolution to adopt the solution, ensure its smooth implementation and establish an international police force for a concrete period of time constitutes an indispensable component part of the comprehensive solution.
