The problem isn’t just NATO’s past but it’s present too
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
17 July 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
In the middle of July and in the midst of the horrific anniversaries of the coup d’etat and invasion, DISY is bringing back its position in favor of Cyprus’ membership of NATO. With today’s statements by the DISY Press Spokesperson and yesterday’s interview with the former DISY Deputy Chairman, DISY is reverting to its well-known ideological obsessions that clash not only with the history and sentiments of the Cypriot people, but also with our homeland’s interests.
As if it’s not enough that they want to erase the historical truth about the domestic perpetrators of the treason that was committed, they also want to erase from Cyprus’ memory the truth about the moral perpetrators of the treason and the tragedy. However, the problem is not only NATO’s past, but its present actions too.
One wonders – does DISY dispute that it was with the backing of NATO that Turkey’s aggression against Greece in the Aegean developed?
Does DISY doubt that NATO is indifferent to the fact that Turkey is an occupying power in Cyprus, Syria and Iraq, but continues to appease it in every way possible?
Does DISY not draw any conclusions from the fact that NATO is even willing to change the names on its operational maps in order to satisfy Erdogan and erase the name of the Republic of Cyprus from them?
Did DISY, like President Christodoulides as well, consider that the last session of the NATO Alliance is a supposed “milestone” for the Cyprus problem, but in the end the Cyprus problem was not even mentioned?
And finally, how will NATO guarantee the security of Cyprus, which is being threatened by a NATO member, namely Turkey?
In any case, it would be useful to hear the position of the Christodoulides government and the parties supporting the government on this issue.
