The pro-solution forces on both sides should send clear messages in all directions that Cyprus must not be partitioned and must be reunited

Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou on the meeting with a delegation of the United Cyprus Party (BKP)

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24th March 2021, Nicosia

“First of all I would like to thank my friend Izzet and the BKP delegation for this meeting we shall have. We are two parties which share to a very great degree the same principles regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem. I consider this meeting extremely important at a time when a lot is at stake with regards the future and perspective of our country and people.

The upcoming Geneva Conference and its outcome will determine how things will develop for our country’s future and perspective. We are concerned about the situation as it has evolved at the moment. Turkey and Mr. Tatar insist on putting forth unacceptable demands such as a two-state solution, confederation or insisting on sovereign equality.

Our position is very clear. The only point where Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can meet is the solution of Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation with political equality, as described by the relevant resolutions of the UN. A solution that will lead to one state with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international personality. A solution that will guarantee fundamental human rights and basic freedoms. We therefore call on Mr. Anastasiades to realise the critical historic period we are going through and take all the necessary initiatives so that we can return to the framework of the solution as defined by the relevant UN resolutions and High-Level Agreements.

As far as we are concerned, together with BKP, but also with all parties, organizations and movements in the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot community that want a solution, we will send clear messages in all directions that Cyprus must not be partitioned, that Cyprus must be reunited. I would like to thank once again our friend Izzet and the BKP delegation for today’s meeting.”
