Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou after the meeting with a delegation of the Turkish Cypriot ‘Communal Democracy Party’ (TDP)
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24th March 2021, Nicosia
“I’d like to thank my friend Cemal and the delegation of the Communal Democracy Party for our very meaningful meeting. I should note that previously we had a meeting with Mr. Mustafa Akinci. We shall also have a meeting with Mr. Izzet Izcan of the United Cyprus Party (BKP).
I consider that our evaluation is common that the result of the Geneva Conference will determine our country’s future and perspective and the very life of Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins in the land that gave birth to us, Cyprus. For that reason, we need to fight to keep the hope of reuniting our common homeland alive.
The only point at which Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can meet is the solution of Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation (BBF) with political equality, as defined in the relevant UN resolutions. Turkey and Mr. Tatar therefore need to abandon their unacceptable demands, while Mr. Anastasiades needs to be consistent to the goal of BBF.
AKEL calls on Mr. Anastasiades to take those initiatives that will oblige Turkey and Mr. Tatar to return to the agreed framework for the solution of BBF with political equality as proscribed in the relevant UN resolutions, so that we can reach a positive result in Geneva.
We have agreed in our meeting that we will take initiatives, all the parties that want and are seeking the solution in both communities, as well as organizations and movements, to send out a clear message to the two leaders. And the message is very clear: Cyprus and our people cannot be partitioned, they must be reunited.
We have also discussed, as mentioned, the issue of the vaccines and the question of halloumi. On the issue of vaccines, I will forward the request made to Mr. Anastasiades, together with our own view, on the issue of the halloumi, to say that after the European Parliament, the issue must be raised before the national parliaments of the 27 EU member states. As far as AKEL is concerned we shall assume our share of responsibility of course. I want to thank my friend Cemal and express the hope that we will manage, everyone together, to reunite our country.”
