The President must be clear in his positions, consistent to the principles and agreed basis of the solution

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stephanou on the Cyprus problem

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 1 December 2018, Nicosia

The solution of the Cyprus problem can be achieved only through negotiations. In a few days the UN Secretary General’s Special envoy on Cyprus Mrs. Lute will come to Cyprus to talk with both sides and see whether there is a possibility to agree on the terms of reference that will enable the resumption of negotiations. At this stage, all the involved parties will be judged as to their intentions and willingness regarding the achievement of a solution to the Cyprus problem.

We call on the President of the Republic in view of Mrs. Lute’s visit to be clear in his positions, consistent to the principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem and the agreed basis of the solution, that is to say Bi-zonal Bi-communal Federation, so that as regards the Greek Cypriot side’s intentions the message is made clear. If the Turkish side also were to cooperate, then it will be possible to resume the negotiations.

The UN Secretary-General will judge the involved parties from Mrs. Lute’s sounding out as to whether the preconditions exist for a resumption of the negotiations. That’s precisely where everyone will be judged on, not through any public statements. We hope everyone will respond to this need to resume negotiations and through them we can be able to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem, that will liberate and reunify the country and the people, and relieve Cyprus of this agony and tragedy that exists since 1974.
