The President must accept without any asterisks and footnotes the clear terms that the UN Secretary-General has set for the resumption of the negotiation procedure

Statement by Yiorgos Loucaides, AKEL Political Bureau member and Parliamentary Representative of AKEL-Left-New Forces

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 14 July 2018, Nicosia

We agree with the government’s assessment that the moment of truth has arrived and that the coming period will be very critical for the Cyprus problem. To the extent that there is a realization of this stark reality, the Greek Cypriot side must be very clear to the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy in Cyprus.

President Anastasiades must accept, without any asterisks and footnotes, the clear terms that the UN Secretary-General Mr. Guterres has set for the resumption of the negotiation procedure. Otherwise, the prospect of an honorable compromise as laid down in the UN resolutions and decisions will be sunk and at the same time our country might enter into dangerous adventures with an unpredictable outcome.

For the negotiation procedure to continue, it is of course necessary that Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot side comply with the terms and preconditions set by the UN Secretary-General. If however the Greek Cypriot side acts correctly, then the burden of responsibility for any developments will be put entirely on Turkey’s shoulders.
