The passage of time without a solution to the Cyprus problem generates new fait accompli on the ground

Statement by the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou on the information about the sale of hotels in the enclosed area of Famagusta

2 May 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

New processes and developments are causing concern surrounding the issue of Famagusta. Of course, we are waiting to be briefed by the government in a responsible manner, so that we know what the real dimensions of the whole issue are.

It is obvious that the passage of time without a solution to the Cyprus problem leads to numerous ramifications and many negative consequences on the ground. We are now observing such a negative consequence in the case of Famagusta. Consequently, on the one hand, we need to see what the real dimensions of the whole issue are, so that it can be addressed accordingly through the assumption of specific initiatives and actions. At the same time, such problems and consequences must trigger us to take initiatives in the direction of breaking the prolonged deadlock on the Cyprus problem, with the aim of resuming the negotiations from the point where they were interrupted at Crans Montana so that we can complete the effort to resolve the Cyprus problem.

Without a solution to the Cyprus problem that liberates and reunites, within the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as described by the United Nations, one realises that the problems are there for all to see. And Turkey is exploiting the prolonged stalemate to impose new occupation fait accompli on the ground.
