18 November 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Cyprus problem can and must be solved only on the basis of Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation with political equality, in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions. Only this solution can lead to a viable SOLUTION of the Cyprus problem.

This firm and longstanding position of the Left Group and the European Parliament was reaffirmed by the Vice President of the Left – European United Left/Northern Green Left (GUE/NGL) at a joint press conference with the General Secretary of AKEL, and within the context of the Group’s Bureau Meeting held in Larnaca.  The Group’s vice-president, Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) MEP Joao Pimenta Lopez, also reaffirmed the Group’s firm support and solidarity with AKEL and the Cypriot people in the struggle for the liberation and reunification of our country. The Portuguese MEP also praised the role and importance of AKEL’s presence and participation, both in the Group and inside the European Parliament, pointing out that this is far more than the number of seats it holds in the European Parliament.

A speedy solution is realistic, AKEL’s General Secretary also underlined, analysing the situation on the Cyprus problem at the Group meeting and referring to the prospect of a solution provided that Andreas Mavroyiannis is elected to the Presidency of the Republic. A.Mavroyiannis is the only candidate who believes in the agreed basis for a solution, respects the convergences that have been recorded and says he is ready to work to create the preconditions for continuing the negotiations from the point where they had remained at Crans-Montana.

Stefanos Stefanou expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Left Group (GUE/NGL) and its affiliated parties for their firm and consistent stance on the Cyprus problem, for their solidarity with the Cypriot people’s struggle for a solution and reunification. “Cyprus has a steadfast companion in the struggle for liberation and reunification,” the General Secretary of AKEL stressed, adding that a strong Left in the 2024 elections will strengthen its role in the effort for a Europe that serves with consistency world peace, the cooperation between countries and peoples in Europe and beyond.

“I 100% endorse the analysis of the situation on the Cyprus problem by the General Secretary of AKEL”, said Demetris Papadimoulis, Vice-President of the European Parliament and MEP of SYRIZA, during his intervention at the meeting. He stressed the need “if we want a solution, if we do not want time to consolidate the fait accompli, we must work for a change in political correlations and strengthen the forces that want a solution”. Papadimoulis noted that a challenge before the parties of the Left is the upcoming presidential elections in Cyprus. “The victory of Andreas Mavroyiannis is a guarantee that the mobility for a solution can be revived”, he stressed. At the same time, he pointed out that the challenge for the progressive forces of the left is to submit to Turkey that if it wants an upgrading of its customs union, it must accept the rules of the resumption of the negotiations based on UN resolutions and decisions and without abandoning the negotiating body of work.

The meeting also discussed the issue of energy, on which T. Tsielepis and C.Ellinas were speakers too, as well as the Palestinian issue, which was addressed by the Palestinian Ambassador in Cyprus.
