The new UN appeal for a ceasefire echoes the anguish of humanity over the bloody massacre in Gaza

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas

13 December 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The new appeal issued by the General Assembly of the UN for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip echoes humanity’s anguish over the ongoing bloody massacre of the Palestinian people by the State of Israel, which is tantamount to genocide.

The millions of people around the world demonstrating in the streets demanding a ceasefire, an end to the occupation and freedom for Palestine are the real force that is intensifying the international isolation of the far-right Netanyahu government. On the other hand, the stand that was taken in last night’s vote by states such as the US, the Britain, Germany and a number of far-right governments too, as well as the previous US veto in the UN Security Council, constitutes complicity with the Israeli atrocities being committed in Gaza.

We note the fact that the Christodoulides government has abandoned the pretexts and moved away from its previous stand of abstention that had shamed our country. Apart from this, of course, the questions had raised by AKEL to the government in relation to the use of the British bases in Cyprus for the transportation of arms and war material to the Israeli army so that it can continue committing its crimes remain unanswered.

The Cypriot people want their homeland to be a bridge of peace and not an aggressive launching pad for waging military raids against a people fighting for their freedom.
