The new government will be judged by its actions not its declarations

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 1st March 2018, Nicosia

We wish success to the Anastasiades government. We hope that this time those benefiting from its work won’t just be its friends from the privileged few. The key requirement always remains growth for all, and not growth for the select few and privileged.

We would like to see less arrogance, more respect for institutions; more transparency and consensus for the solution of the many problems our country is facing.

We are also looking for less talk and more action for the combating of interwoven interests and corruption; for more action to combat poverty, squalor and inequalities that are tormenting our society.

And above all we waiting that this time the President will work with consistency and steadfastness for the achievement of a solution that will bring liberation from the occupation and the reunification of the country and people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

Judging from the experience of the first five year Anastasiades term of office, we admit that we aren’t that optimistic. The criterion of truth is practice and deeds, and not declarations. The government will be judged by its actions.

AKEL will be strict in exercising its role in opposition. However it will, as always, be responsible and objective. It will continue to develop its policy with a view to serving the interests of the country, the people, the workers and society in general.

And one final comment: We hope that the Code of Conduct signed by the Government’s Ministers won’t remain – this time as well – among the administration’s broken pledges.
