The Minister of Agriculture should roll up her sleeves instead of pointing fingers

AKEL’s reply to the Minister of Agriculture on the water issue

8 February 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The water situation is too critical to be dealt with by the Minister of Agriculture and the government of Nicos Christodoulides engaging in communication games.

If there had been any planning and strategy in place, the government would not be running behind developments. It would not have declared that it had solved the water problem, while at the same time deciding on the imposition of water cuts for households and farmers. It would not have continued to allocate huge amounts of water to golf courses and large developments, limiting reserves for society.

Water is not a luxury; it is a social good. The proposals resubmitted yesterday by AKEL constitute a comprehensive plan, aimed at addressing the country’s water shortage. Instead of pointing fingers, the Minister would do well to roll up her sleeves and get to work, even belatedly.
