The intolerable and deplorable action of Turkey constitutes an aggressive act and an attempt to create a faits accomplis

map - turkish provocationsThe intolerable and deplorable action of Turkey against the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus, even of the southern regions of Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEC) which Turkey itself wasn’t challenging, constitutes an aggressive act and an attempt to create a faits accomplis, which if implemented will represent the worst fait accompli since the time of the declaration of the pseudo-state in the occupied areas in 1983. Ankara’s provocative actions are increasing at a time when the beginning of the substantive phase of the negotiations on the Cyprus problem had been agreed. This makes Turkey’s behaviour even more unacceptable given that in practice it influences the negotiation procedure in a particularly negative way.

In view of the magnitude of the provocation and its negative repercussions, the international community’s reaction ranges unfortunately, up till now, from subdued to non-existent, a fact which is of great concern and subject of reflection.

Is this the way the European Union demonstrates solidarity towards one of its member-states which is the subject of an unprovoked attack?

Moreover, is this how the United States and Britain perceive their celebrated “strategic alliance” with the Republic of Cyprus, when the Anastasiades government has indeed aligned itself fully with their interests, generously giving and granting them anything they demand.

We therefore are forced to pose to the Anastasiades government and the governing DISY Rally party the question as to whether they will continue, even after these developments, to harbour the same illusions?

Or will they at last understand the pressing need to change course in the position they are adopting both with regards the negotiation procedure on the Cyprus problem, and the one-sided foreign policy they are following so that our political defence is restored in view of Turkey’s adventurist acts.
