The Group of the Left in the European Parliament denounces Orban’s actions at the summit of the Organisation of Turkic States

The Group of the Left (The Left) in the European Parliament today issued a statement denouncing the support of the Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban for the illegal secession in Cyprus.

Τhe statement follows in full:

We deplore Prime Minister Victor Orbán’s participation in the informal summit of the Organisation of Turkic States in Shusha on 5-6 July, where Turkey attempted to gain recognition for the illegal secessionist entity in occupied Cyprus.

The EU’s position, as expressed in recent resolutions, is clear in rejecting “any attempt to facilitate or assist in any way the international recognition of the secessionist entity in occupied Cyprus, including in relation to its alleged acceptance as an observer in the Organization of Turkic States.” The only recognized subject of international law in Cyprus is the Republic of Cyprus.

As The Left in the European Parliament, we will continue to support a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus problem based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with a single sovereignty, single citizenship, and single international personality, with political equality as set out in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
