The government’s handlings and diplomacy will be judged by their results
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 23rd September 2020, Nicosia
The forthcoming European Council is an important diplomatic and political battle for Cyprus. Our wish and hope is that there will be more positive results than what Cyprus had at the Foreign Affairs Council. We do not hide our concern about the fact that in the European Council the day before yesterday, Cyprus was essentially on its own.
If we all agree that the principal goal is none other than the solution of the Cyprus problem, the liberation and reunification of our homeland, then Cyprus’ diplomatic and political asset must be utilised in the direction of the resumption of negotiations from the point where they were interrupted at Crans Montana and on the basis of the agreed framework. Sanctions are not an end in themselves, but just one of the instruments that can and should be used to achieve the de-escalation of the tension in our region, the termination of Turkey’s aggression and to pave the way for a peaceful solution to the problems. The recent developments in the relations between Greece and Turkey must also be taken into account by the government in its handlings.
In any case, AKEL will await the results of the European Council to make its overall assessment. The government’s handlings and our country’s diplomacy will be judged by their results.
