The government needs to understand that Cyprus’ future is above any petty-party and sectional considerations

AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou replies to Government Spokesman

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2 July 2019, Nicosia

The Secretary General of the UN holds the Greek Cypriot side equally responsible, together with the Turkish Cypriot side, for the failure of the Crans Montana Conference and for the protracted stalemate on the Cyprus problem.

The President of the Republic – and of course the Government Spokesman Mr. Prodromou – never raised the issue with the UN Secretary General. They evidently cannot blame him for giving cover to Turkey. But the government ruling forces are accusing AKEL in order to demonize it because by doing so they believe they will conceal the negative consequences the President of the Republic’s mistakes are provoking for the Greek Cypriot side and the prospects of a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The government ruling forces are called upon to give a reply on the substance.

How convincing can the President of the Republic be about his intentions when the position for a resumption of the negotiations is accompanied by terms and preconditions that annul important convergences recorded, which the Secretary General of the UN is calling for their safeguarding?

This is what they must provide an answer to instead of playing games for internal consumption purposes.

The government ruling forces need to understand that the future of Cyprus is above any petty-party and sectional considerations.
