The government must support a ceasefire in Gaza and the creation of a Palestinian state

22 January 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

As the massacre of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza continues, Netanyahu provocatively reiterated his long lasting stance against the two state solution and the creation of a Palestinian state, reaffirming that the war is not aimed at “eliminating Hamas”, but at ensuring the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians. Besides, the recent statement made by the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy that Israel used to fund Hamas in order to weaken the Palestinian Authority must not go unnoticed.

All this is unfolding as the Palestinian people are continuing to count the civilian death toll in the thousands and there are growing indications of an extension of the war with the launching of an Israeli attack on Lebanon, which will have dire consequences for the security of the entire region and beyond. The EU Foreign Affairs Council is convening today within this framework and the European “10-point initiative” on the situation is simultaneously being promoted.

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus will be called upon to take a stand and must at long last stand on the right side of History, on the side of international law, the resolutions of the United Nations and peace.

AKEL calls on the Christodoulides government to categorically support the ceasefire, the termination of the war and the blockade of Gaza, to support the final solution on the basis of the UN Resolutions that provide for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, coexisting in peace and security alongside the State of Israel.
