AKEL on the report of the Audit Service on DEFA on the LNG import terminal in Cyprus

22 January 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Report of the Audit Service on the LNG import terminal in Cyprus demonstrates the grave responsibilities of the Anastasiades-DISY government for the lack of transparency and the erroneous practices that were followed, resulting in long delays in the vital work, for the Cyprus economy and society, and the bringing of natural gas for power generation purposes.

At the same time, the report of the Audit Office raises many questions and concerns as to whether the government of Nikos Christodoulides, with its handling regarding the termination and reappointment of the Board of Directors of the Natural Gas Public Company (DEFA), can actually manage and complete such a large project, of enormous cost, with the danger risk of losing funding from the European Union.

The procedures for the arrival of Natural Gas, for which the works should have been completed in June 2022, have been extended again to mid-2024, after five failed attempts. This means that Cyprus will continue to pay hundreds of millions of euros for pollutants, amounts that are a burden on households and businesses.

The creation of a natural gas import terminal is a project of huge importance for the country and must proceed immediately, quickly and transparently.
