The government must be held to account for the mess it has led the public health sector into
Statement by AKEL Parliamentary Representative G.Loukaides after the Parliamentary Health Committee’s session
2 December 2021
As AKEL, we once again wish to denounce the government and demand that the Anastasiades-DISY government be held accountable and apologise to the Cypriot people for the situation, for the misery, or rather, the state of affairs to which it has led the public health sector.
Without going into the specific facts and details regarding the incident at Polis Chrysochous Hospital, it is obvious that the government, instead of proceeding to support, modernise and upgrade the public health sector, as it had pledged to do since the summer of 2016, its handlings have led to the deterioration of the public health system. And this downgrading is even worse when we refer to regional hospitals and health centres.
The situation in which the public health sector has found itself with the sole responsibility of the Anastasiades-DISY government is very bad. And because we don’t expect something to be done by this government after almost nine years of government, it is clear that one of the principal, the main stakes in the run-up to the presidential elections will be the state of the public health sector, but also public health in general in our country.
