The government has no respect for Parliament, nor for society
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
23 December 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The government has no respect for Parliament, but neither does it respect society. Yesterday, Mr.Anastasiades revoked the bill for the reduction of VAT on electricity, which was approved by all the parties – except for the ruling DISY party. In other words, the high cost of living and price increases are hitting hard the income of the majority of society every day, but the DISY government is not only not moved to take any drastic measures – but is even blocking measures political forces are taking.
The government’s provocative stand is even greater when one considers that all Cypriots are paying dearly for electricity, not just because of the global increase in prices, but primarily because of the fines for pollutants – something for which the government and its failure to promote renewable energy and gas is to blame.
The government and DISY are cynically indifferent to the situation thousands of small and medium sized enterprises and households face who need a relief on their electricity bills, as well as other on goods that are getting more expensive by the day. This is further proof that this government – not only cannot solve the problems society faces – but does not even know people’s daily reality, the cost of living, wages and everything affecting the majority of society.
