The government failed to meet its own expectations that it had been raising all this time

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the European Council conclusions

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2nd October 2020, Nicosia

The government went under the bar

The result of any policy is judged by the goals set by the person handling the issues and by the results achieved. Judging by the goals it set, the government has failed. The government failed to meet its own expectations that it itself had been raising all this time.

AKEL repeatedly warned that there mustn’t be any illusions about how the EU operates, nor should the huge economic and geopolitical interests that link EU states with Turkey be ignored. We also stressed that sanctions are not an end in themselves, but a tool to achieve the main goal which is the de-escalation of the tension and the solution of the Cyprus problem.

The text of the Conclusions in reality repeat previous references of the EU with verbal warnings to Turkey to end the violations of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus. We underline the references on the need to resume the negotiations for a solution of the Cyprus problem within the agreed framework, as well as the reference to the Resolutions of the UN Security Council on Famagusta.

The government’s duty is to focus on the goal of de-escalating the tension and on the solution of the Cyprus problem. This is the message that the government must be conveying with consistency and convincingly to the international community.

AKEL will continue to insist that only with a solution of the Cyprus problem within the agreed framework, only with the liberation and reunification of our homeland can the security of Cyprus and its people be guaranteed.
