The government cannot remain indifferent
Statement by AKEL Political Bureau member and Head of Economy Policy Charis Polycarpou
4 March 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The economic consequences for Cyprus stemming from the situation in Ukraine do not allow the government of Anastasiades – DISY to stand idly by. Instead, immediate measures are needed to support the economy and society.
The economic consequences follow the existing sharp price increases in energy, fuel, transport and essential goods.
This is precisely why we reiterate the need for an immediate meeting of the Council of Political leaders to discuss the consequences and problems arising and affecting our country.
It is our conviction that the government needs to act immediately in order to:
First, submit a comprehensive plan to manage the increases in energy, fuel and essentials.
Second, address the dramatic situation in the grain market and in particular to safeguard the country’s strategic stocks.
Third, prepare a plan to address the impact on tourism which is expected to be severely affected in the coming period.
AKEL expresses its readiness to contribute in this direction with the submission of a comprehensive package of proposals.
