AKEL calls for clarification regarding the pro-Israel lobby in the House of Representatives
19 October 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
In a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, AKEL’s Parliamentary Leader, Giorgos Loucaides, raises a number of serious issues arising from the allocation of a House of Representatives chamber for an event marking the formation of a joint group of MPs from DISY, DIKO and far-right ELAM, in collaboration with the pro-Israeli “Israel Allies Foundation”.
The Speaker of the House is called upon to provide clarification regarding the approval process for the event, the institutional status of this particular group, any commitments they may have undertaken, and regarding the sources of funding and support for its activities. At the same time, political questions are being raised regarding the collaboration of MPs with organisations that promote the positions and interests of third parties, including objectives that clash with Resolutions of the United Nations and international law, upon which the Republic of Cyprus also bases its struggle on to put an end to the occupation.
Furthermore, Giorgos Loucaides proposes the establishment of a clear institutional framework for the future operation of such groups, that the matter be examined by the House of Representatives’ Ethics Committee, and that the whole issue be discussed at the next Parliamentary Leaders’ Meeting.
The aim is to ensure transparency, accountability, independence and the prestige of the House of Representatives, and to bring it into line with the principles of international law.
