The government and Attorney General’s Office should stop hiding about the black spy van case

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas

Certain people want the state to be a place where everyone does whatever one wants

1 December 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The sinister case of the black spy van is being closed – it appears – with a fine handed to the company and the acquittal of the company’s executives from the charges against them. In other words, an illegal mechanism has been moving around for years unchecked and monitoring thousands of our country’s citizens, but eventually no one will be held accountable and punished.

The government and the Attorney General’s Office must stop hiding. They must take a stand. Especially the Attorney General needs to explain the acquittal of Israeli Tal Dillian and the other two persons from the charge.

The black spy van is a stain for the Cypriot state, on the rule of law, on our national security, on democracy and human rights in our country. However, the impunity on the case represents an even greater shameful stain for the state, which apparently certain forces and circles want to turn it into a place where everyone does whatever one wants for espionage, surveillance and mass phone/email eavesdropping.
